Be Curious Instead of Critical

Have you ever looked at someone doing something and thought or said, "That's weird!"? Instead of being critical of other people's experiences, we should be curious. This is Part 1 in a three-part video series.

Watch the video and have a discussion with your class or someone you know. Below, there are some suggested questions or writing prompts.

When people do or like different things than we do, it's not weird, it's just different.

When you say that something is weird, you're really saying that you set the standard for what is not weird and what is acceptable. That's not right.

We need to respect each other's differences and each other's experiences. It can help us celebrate other people and their unique expression of who they are.

Have you ever looked at someone doing something and thought or said, "That's weird!"? What was it and why did you say, “That’s weird!”?

Has anyone ever looked at something that you did or said, and said, "That's weird!" to you? How did that make you feel?

Is there a difference between something being weird and something being different? What is it?

In what ways can we respect each other’s differences?

Think of something that you think is “weird.” Why do you think it’s weird? How can you be curious about it or look at it from someone else’s point of view that makes it not weird anymore?
