Shyness and Self-Confidence

Confidence doesn’t mean you have to change who you are. Confidence is realizing that you matter.

Read this blog, watch the video, and have a discussion with your class or someone you know. Below, there are some suggested questions to get you started.

As kids grow older, they are trying to figure out their place in the world and there can be issues with shyness and self-confidence. Confidence doesn’t mean you have to change who you are. Confidence is realizing that you matter.

You may be naturally shy or naturally boisterous. Everyone is wired differently and that’s okay. For some people, it’s hard to speak up and for some, it’s hard to stay quiet. However, we all have to learn when to speak up and when not to speak up. Don’t use your natural tendencies as an excuse not to do hard things.

The reason some of us struggle with self-confidence is we are comparing ourselves to other people. But we are not all alike. We are individuals and it’s not really fair to compare ourselves to others. We all have different strengths and weaknesses.

Don’t define yourself by what you see other people doing. Be okay with being you. It’s a choice, and when you make better choices you will live a better life, so choose well. Oh yeah!

Questions for Discussion:

Do you struggle with shyness and self-confidence? Why do you think that is?

Do you believe that you matter? Why or why not?

If you struggle to have self-confidence, do you think some of it has to do with comparing yourself to other people? How do you compare yourself to others?

What does it mean to you to do hard things? Is there a hard thing you can do that will help you with shyness and self-confidence?

If you don’t struggle with shyness and self-confidence, is there something that you do struggle with? Is there a hard thing you can do to overcome that?

What do you think of the statement, “Be okay with being you”?
