Self-Control In the Classroom
Self-control in the classroom is remembering that there is a time to be silly and a time to be serious.
Watch the video and have a discussion with your class or someone you know. Below, there are some suggested questions or writing prompts.
I made this video as a shout-out to a particular school. However, I share an important message about self-control in the classroom.
Sometimes, I can be pretty silly in my videos. This video is no exception.
There’s a time to be silly and there is a time to be serious. The same goes for joking.
At the beginning of the video, I mispronounced Mr. Janerico’s name a few times. But I actually called the school before making this video to find out how to pronounce his name correctly because I wanted to be respectful. I was being silly, but I’m not going to keep joking. I might hurt Mr. Janerico’s feelings and I don’t want to do that.
When your teacher is teaching, it’s a time to be serious and listen. To figure out whether it’s the right time to be silly or not you must:
Stop,
Think, and
Choose
Before you do something silly, stop and think: Is this the right time to be silly? Then choose to do the right thing. If you have any doubts about whether or not you should say or do something, then you probably should NOT say or do it.
Questions for Discussion:
Do you think there is a time to be silly and a time to be serious?
Think of some examples of when it’s okay to be silly. Think of some examples when it’s better to be serious.
What does it mean to stop, think, and choose? Give examples.
